Granit Xhaka has committed his future to Sunderland, informing the club he wants to stay despite Chelsea's pursuit.
The 33-year-old captain's decision, first reported by journalist Phil Smith and backed by Sky Sports News, deals a significant blow to Chelsea's summer recruitment plans.
Chelsea had an opening £8 million bid rejected by Sunderland last week and were preparing an improved offer of £10 million plus add-ons before Xhaka communicated his decision.
Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg had previously reported that the midfielder had reached a full verbal agreement on personal terms with Chelsea.
The Swiss international's desire to reunite with Xabi Alonso, who coached him during Bayer Leverkusen's historic undefeated domestic double in 2023, 24, appeared to make a move inevitable.
Alonso, now Chelsea manager, viewed Xhaka as a priority signing for his midfield rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
However, Sunderland's stance remained firm throughout.
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman and head coach Régis Le Bris maintained their captain was not for sale, with the club under no financial pressure to accept a fee well below the £13 million they paid Leverkusen just 12 months ago.
Xhaka's emotional connection to Wearside proved decisive. Speaking to Swiss outlet Blick prior to the World Cup, he said: "The city feels like Basel. Like the St. Johann district where I grew up.
You can only perform at your best when you feel comfortable in a place."
He added: "For me, the most important thing is that my family is happy. And we are in Sunderland. I'm not even thinking about a transfer."
The midfielder led Sunderland to a remarkable seventh-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League, securing a Europa League spot. His leadership and experience were central to the club's overachievement under Le Bris.
Reports indicate internal friction at Chelsea over the pursuit. While Alonso pushed for the signing, decision-makers at Stamford Bridge were hesitant to invest significant funds in a 33-year-old, a move that contradicts the club's youth-centric recruitment strategy.
Xhaka remains under contract at the Stadium of Light until June 2028, giving Sunderland considerable leverage in any future negotiations. Switzerland's record appearance holder will now prepare to lead the club into European competition for the first time in decades.
It remains unclear whether Chelsea will completely abandon their interest or test Sunderland's resolve with a further bid.
