Real Madrid published an official statement on July 3 categorically denying any interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, insisting the club has made no effort "either directly or indirectly" to sign the Argentina international.
The unusual Comunicado Oficial came less than 24 hours after Fernández's agent, Javier Pastore, told Spanish outlets MARCA and Diario AS that Real Madrid had "sounded out" the 25-year-old and that "Enzo has been one of the best of the year."
It is highly uncommon for elite clubs to release formal press statements explicitly denying interest in a named player. The move underscores Real Madrid's determination to protect their institutional relationship with Chelsea amid escalating speculation.
"Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognized, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship, " the statement read.
The club added that it "considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and that do not respond to reality, " citing principles of "institutional loyalty" toward Chelsea.
Pastore had confirmed on July 2 that he and Fernández are "looking at possibilities to leave Chelsea" but stressed there is "nothing firm or confirmed at any club." The midfielder is currently on international duty with Argentina at the FIFA World Cup.
The saga has roots in an April 2026 incident when Fernández was reportedly handed a two-match internal ban by Chelsea after expressing a desire to live in Madrid during a YouTube interview.
Pastore later claimed those comments referred to the Spanish capital generally rather than Real Madrid specifically.
Chelsea, now managed by Xabi Alonso, are understood to value Fernández at around £120 million. He originally joined from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record fee of £106.8 million.
Real Madrid's midfield has been the subject of considerable transfer speculation this summer, but the club's statement leaves no ambiguity regarding Fernández's situation.
With no confirmed suitors and the World Cup ongoing, Fernández's future remains unresolved. Chelsea will expect any interested party to meet their substantial asking price before sanctioning a departure.
