Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a club-record deal worth £85m to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, with the move now imminent rather than officially confirmed by either club.
David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the news on June 30 that Spurs had won the race for the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, submitting the highest proposal. Fabrizio Romano subsequently confirmed the agreement with his trademark "HERE WE GO!".
The £85m fixed fee is fully guaranteed, with West Ham accepting the price they had always demanded. It comfortably eclipses Tottenham's previous record of £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in 2024.
Manchester United pushed hard and remained in active negotiations until the final hours, but ultimately declined to match Tottenham's package on both the transfer fee and the player's salary.
Ornstein wrote that the "numbers were beyond where #MUFC were willing to go, " while Romano added that United "will now focus on different targets in midfield."
For West Ham, the sale ranks as the second-highest in the club's history, behind only the departure of Declan Rice. The fee represents a significant profit on a player signed from Southampton less than 12 months ago.
Fernandes made 36 Premier League appearances last season, scoring three goals, with some sources crediting him with four goals and four assists across 38 games in all competitions.
Following West Ham's relegation to the Championship, Fernandes was eager to secure a move that kept him in the top flight, and Tottenham's offer proved decisive once agent Jorge Mendes had negotiated with both bidders.
Roberto De Zerbi made Fernandes a priority to strengthen his midfield, and the signing reflects Tottenham's aggressive recruitment under the Italian. The deal would make Fernandes the club's fifth summer arrival.
He follows Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka through the door, underlining the scale of Spurs' rebuild in the current window.
The arrival of Fernandes comes amid Tottenham's wider search for creativity, having previously made contact for Como's Baturina at a €80m valuation.
Fernandes still needs to complete his medical and sign his contract before the transfer is formally announced.
