Chelsea are in active club-to-club talks with Rayo Vallecano over a move for left-back Pep Chavarría, according to Fabrizio Romano, who confirms initial contact has been made and the player is keen on the switch.
However, the opening salvo has already been knocked back. Spanish media including Mundo Deportivo report that Chelsea, via parent company BlueCo, submitted an offer of €9 million (£7.7m) plus add-ons, which Rayo immediately rejected.
The 28-year-old has emerged as a target as the Blues look to reshape their left-back options following Marc Cucurella's recent £51.8 million departure for Real Madrid.
Interest in Chavarría was first reported by Matteo Moretto of Relevo and Marca, before Romano confirmed on June 30 that formal negotiations between the clubs were underway.
There is a notable gap between the parties on valuation. According to Unión Rayo, Rayo are pointing to his official release clause of €50 million.
Other reports place his expected valuation or release clause closer to €25 million, leaving the true asking price unclear. What is certain is that Rayo, under no pressure to sell, considered the opening €9m offer well short.
Chavarría is tied to the Madrid club on a long-term contract running until 2030, strengthening Rayo's negotiating hand considerably.
He joined Rayo from Real Zaragoza in 2022 for just €1.8 million and has since made 125 appearances, establishing himself as a reliable presence at left-back and left wing-back in La Liga.
His potential role at Stamford Bridge remains a point of nuance. While some reports frame him as a direct Cucurella replacement, others suggest Chelsea may promote Jorrel Hato to start, with Chavarría arriving as an experienced backup.
Chelsea, now managed by Xabi Alonso, are not the only suitors. Bayer Leverkusen are seeking a replacement for Alejandro Grimaldo, while Villarreal, who had a €6 million bid rejected, and Real Betis have also been credited with interest.
With multiple clubs circling and Rayo holding firm on their valuation, Chelsea will need to significantly improve their proposal to advance the deal. Stay with DasFootball for the latest on Chelsea's pursuit of Chavarría.
