Villarreal demolished Levante 5-1 at home, with Nicolas Pépé delivering a masterclass performance to seal a dominant display at Estadio de la Ceramica.
Villarreal entered the match sitting third in La Liga with 65 points from 33 games. Levante, meanwhile, occupied 19th place and fighting relegation with just 32 points from 32 matches. The gap in quality and form would prove decisive on this May afternoon.
Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the 38th minute, firing Villarreal ahead as the hosts controlled possession. The Georgian striker found space inside the box and made no mistake with his finish. Villarreal dominated the first half, creating chances through their attacking midfielders while Levante offered little resistance.
The away side trailed at halftime but emerged with renewed purpose. Carlos Espí pulled one back in the 51st minute with a well-taken goal. For a brief moment, Levante showed fight and belief they could mount a comeback.
That hope evaporated quickly. Villarreal reasserted control and Alberto Moleiro restored the two-goal cushion in the 62nd minute. Mikautadze then struck again in the 68th minute, securing his second goal of the game and effectively putting the contest beyond doubt.
The Yellow Submarine continued their onslaught as the match progressed. Tajon Buchanan added a fifth in the 87th minute after coming off the bench. Nicolas Pépé capped a stunning individual performance by scoring in the 90th minute to make it 5-1.
Pépé was the standout performer, earning a rating of 10 and providing two assists alongside his goal. Mikautadze's double demonstrated his clinical finishing, while Moleiro controlled play from midfield. Espí's goal provided Levante's only bright spot in an otherwise bleak performance.
Villarreal dominated the statistics, recording 20 total shots with eight on target. They maintained 53% possession and completed 475 of 538 passes with 88% accuracy. Their expected goals figure of 2.22 actually underestimated their clinical finishing. Levante managed just three shots on target from 12 attempts and created minimal danger throughout.
The victory strengthens Villarreal's grip on third place as the season winds down. Levante's defeat deepens their relegation concerns, leaving them 11 points from safety with limited matches remaining. This result represents the gulf between ambition and survival in La Liga.
Villarreal will look to build on this momentum in their remaining fixtures. Levante must regroup quickly and fight for their top-flight status in the games ahead.
